REGION GUIDE — APPLE GIFT CARD

Apple Gift Card Region Locked? Country Rules + Final Payout Option

Apple Gift Cards are region locked: the card country must match your Apple ID country before Apple credits the balance. This guide explains US, UK, and EU rules, why country mismatches happen most often in NG, KE, GH, BJ, CIV, CM, and what to do if selling is easier.

Quick answer

Apple Gift Cards are region locked and country-specific. A US gift card needs a US Apple ID. A UK gift card needs a UK Apple ID. The rule is enforced at redemption — Apple's system checks your Apple ID's country/region setting against the card's issuing country before crediting balance.

For most African users, the cards you'll receive are sent by Diaspora family — overwhelmingly US gift cards. If your Apple ID is set to your home country (Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Bénin, Côte d'Ivoire, or Cameroon), those US cards won't redeem.

You have two paths: switch your Apple ID country to US (which requires a US payment method, zero current balance, and accepting that your existing purchases stay tied to the old country), or sell the card for local cash. For most users without a US credit card or US PayPal, selling is faster and less disruptive.

Direct answer for region-locked Apple cards

If your Apple Gift Card is valid but your Apple ID country does not match, check its final payout price before trying risky workarounds.

Apple Gift Cards are country-specific: a US Apple Gift Card usually needs a US Apple ID, a UK card needs a UK Apple ID, and EU cards follow their own country rules. If the card is unused and valid but you cannot redeem it in your account, SellCardNow lets you check the final payout price first. When the card is valid and matches the selected region, amount, and payout country, the calculator price is the price we pay.

  • US, UK, and EU Apple cards need matching Apple ID country rules.
  • Valid region-locked cards can go from calculator to final payout path.
  • Continue only through the official SellCardNow WhatsApp route.

Check the card country, Apple ID country, and receipt proof before you redeem or sell.

This page explains the region-lock rule. If you need a practical checklist, use the SellCardNow Apple utility guides below, then return to the final payout calculator when the card is valid and unused.

Why region matters

Apple's gift card system enforces country boundaries for three reasons:

  • Currency: a US gift card is denominated in USD. A UK card is GBP. An EU card is EUR. Apple's billing system can't credit USD balance to a NGN-priced Apple ID without an exchange-rate mechanism — which Apple deliberately doesn't offer.
  • Tax & financial compliance: each country has different VAT / tax treatment for digital goods. A gift card sold in the US has US sales tax handled; using it in NGN would require NG VAT — a tangle Apple sidesteps by hard-walling country.
  • Fraud prevention: gift cards are a known fraud vector. Country-locking prevents users from buying cards in one currency and immediately switching country to redeem at favorable exchange rates.

Apple states the rule directly in their support documentation: “You can't redeem Apple Gift Cards, App Store Cards, or App Store & iTunes Gift Cards outside of the country or region of purchase.”

And from Apple's gift card terms: “Gift Cards purchased in the United States and content codes can only be linked to an Account in the United States and can only be used for purchases in the United States.”

The practical implication: there is no Apple-supported way to redeem a cross-region gift card. Apple won't override this for individual users — even via Apple Support phone calls.

Check your card's country

Multiple signals to confirm:

  • Physical card back: country of issue printed in small text near the legal disclaimer
  • Email receipt header: sender domain or country in the email body
  • Original purchase receipt: currency on the receipt — USD = US, GBP = UK, EUR = EU
  • For digital codes from resellers: ask the seller for the original purchase receipt before paying — if they refuse, that's a red flag (see Seven Gift Card Scam Signals)

For African users receiving cards from Diaspora family, the default assumption should be a US card unless you have specific evidence otherwise.

Check your Apple ID country

On iPhone or iPad:

  • Open Settings
  • Tap your name at the top
  • Tap Media & Purchases
  • Tap View Account (you may need to authenticate with Face ID or your Apple ID password)
  • The Country/Region field shows your current setting

On Mac:

  • Open the App Store
  • Click your profile (lower-left)
  • Click View Information
  • Scroll to Country/Region

On the web:

If your Apple ID country doesn't match the gift card country, that is the region mismatch that usually blocks redemption.

Can you change Apple ID country?

Yes, but Apple imposes strict conditions per their official Change country/region documentation:

  • Balance must be zerobefore switching. Apple's guide states: “Spend any balance remaining on your Apple Account.” Any leftover balance must be spent down or transferred. Apple does not let you switch country with a non-zero balance.
  • No active subscriptions in the old country. Apple Music, iCloud+, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, App Store auto-renewals — all must be canceled before switching.
  • You must have a valid payment method for the new country. Apple's guide notes you “may be required to enter a valid payment method for your new country or region.” This is the hardest condition for most African users:
  • To switch to US: you need a US credit card (issued by a US bank), or US PayPal account, or Apple Card (US-only).
  • To switch to UK: you need a UK credit/debit card or UK PayPal.
  • To switch to EU: depends on the specific EU country.
  • App Store reviews and ratings reset for purchased apps. Country-specific App Store reviews don't transfer.
  • Family Sharing implications: Apple notes “If you're a part of a Family Sharing group, you might not be able to change your country or region.” If you're the Family organizer, all family members must have payment methods compatible with the new country.

For a Nigerian Apple user with a USD Apple Gift Card from family, the practical question is: do you have a US credit card or US PayPal account? If yes, switching is straightforward. If no — and most don't — selling the card is the cleaner exit.

Your country

Country deep-dive

🇳🇬 Nigeria (NGN)

Nigerian Apple users typically have local NG Apple IDs paying in NGN. The most common path to a USD Apple Gift Card is Diaspora family (US, UK, sometimes EU).

Key NG-specific notes:

  • Switching to a US Apple IDrequires a US payment method. NG users without family-issued US cards or US PayPal usually can't meet this requirement. Apple's verification at switch-time checks the payment method's country.
  • Apple Pay is not available in Nigeria. This affects some Apple ID country-change flows (for countries that require Apple Pay verification — not US/UK).
  • NDPR(Nigerian Data Protection Regulation) doesn't impose extra friction on cross-country Apple ID changes, but it does apply to any personal data the change touches.
  • If you decide to sell: SellCardNow accepts US, UK, and EU Apple Gift Cards from Nigerian users. Check the Apple final payout price first, then continue through the official WhatsApp route if the price works for you.

Country note

🇰🇪 Kenya (KES)

Kenyan Apple users with US gift cards face the same Diaspora pattern. KE-specific factors:

  • KE Apple IDs (set to Kenya) cannot redeem USD cards. Switching to a US Apple ID requires a US payment method — uncommon among KE users.
  • KE's VASP Act 2025 (taking effect with 2026 implementing regulations) doesn't apply to gift cards specifically — gift cards are not in the VASP perimeter (see Is Selling Gift Cards Legal in Kenya?).
  • If you sell: check the final payout price first, then continue to the official route for supported local payment. See the best site to sell gift cards in Kenya.

Country note

🇬🇭 Ghana (GHS)

GH Apple users face the same Diaspora pattern. GH-specific factors:

  • GH Apple IDs require GHS billing methods. Switching to US requires US payment method.
  • Ghana's Act 1044 (AML 2020) doesn't impede gift card redemption directly.
  • If you sell: check the final payout price first and continue through official WhatsApp for the local payout route. See how to sell an Apple gift card in Ghana.

Switch country or sell?

Decide

Should you redeem it — or sell it?

Redeem it if:

  • Your Apple ID balance is currently zero
  • You have a payment method valid for the new country (US credit card, US PayPal, UK card, etc.)
  • You actively want to use Apple services in the new country (App Store, Music, iCloud)
  • You're prepared for the downsides: subscriptions reset, App Store reviews stay tied to old country, Family Sharing region-locks
Apple's country/region change guide

Consider selling it if:

  • You don't have a payment method for the new country (this is the most common blocker)
  • You have an active subscription you don't want to lose
  • You want local cash without the multi-step country-switch process
  • The card is for an Apple service you don't actively use
  • If you're region-locked, check SellCardNow's final payout first. Selling can be more efficient than switching Apple ID country and losing your existing purchases.

Check Apple final payout price

Frequently asked questions about Apple Gift Card region restrictions

Are Apple Gift Cards region locked?

Yes. Apple Gift Cards are region locked: per Apple's terms a card "can only be redeemed in the country or region where it was purchased," and the card's country must match your Apple ID country. A US Apple Gift Card needs a US Apple ID, a UK card needs a UK Apple ID, and EU cards follow their own country rules. If a valid, unused card cannot be redeemed because the regions do not match, you can check its final payout price and sell it for local cash instead of switching your Apple ID country.

Can I sell a US Apple Gift Card from Nigeria?

Yes. A US Apple Gift Card can be sold from Nigeria. The card region determines who can redeem it, not where the seller lives. Check final payout first so SellCardNow can confirm the card type, region, amount, and payout country through the official flow.

What does "this card is for another country" mean?

It means the Apple Gift Card country and your Apple ID country do not match. A US Apple Gift Card must be redeemed to a US Apple ID, a UK card to a UK Apple ID, and so on. If the regions do not match, Apple will not credit the balance.

Can I redeem a US Apple Gift Card on my Nigerian Apple ID?

No. Apple enforces country matching at redemption. Per Apple's gift card terms: 'Gift Cards purchased in the United States and content codes can only be linked to an Account in the United States and can only be used for purchases in the United States.' The card's country (US) must match your Apple ID country (Nigeria, in this case) before Apple credits the balance.

What happens if I add a US card to an Apple ID after I've made purchases in NGN?

If you successfully switch your Apple ID to US country first (with a US payment method and zero NGN balance), the US card will redeem. Your previous NGN purchases stay tied to your old country and won't be accessible.

Is changing my Apple ID country free?

The change itself is free, but the requirements (balance = zero, no active subscriptions, valid new-country payment method) often have real costs — you may need to cancel subscriptions, spend down balance, or acquire a new payment method.

Will my purchased apps and subscriptions transfer if I change country?

Purchased apps generally remain in your library (download history). Active subscriptions must be canceled before switching country. App Store reviews don't transfer. iCloud data transfers (your data isn't country-locked), but iCloud+ subscription resets.

Can I share gift cards through Family Sharing across regions?

No. Family Sharing shares purchases (apps, music, subscriptions) within the family group's country. Per Apple's Change country/region guide: 'If you're a part of a Family Sharing group, you might not be able to change your country or region.' Gift card balances do not share across Family Sharing — each family member redeems their own.

Can SellCardNow sell a UK Apple Gift Card to NGN?

SellCardNow supports several Apple Gift Card regions for resale in Nigeria. Check final payout first for your specific region and denomination. Do not send a full code in a public post, comment, or unverified channel.

Do all gift cards have region restrictions like Apple cards?

Not all, but many do. Amazon Gift Cards are also region-specific, while Steam, Razer Gold, Xbox, and other cards can vary by product and country. Region matters because it affects who can use the card and whether the card can match the final payout selection.

What happens if I redeem an Apple Gift Card to the wrong account?

Once a card is redeemed, the balance is tied to that Apple account and store region. The original card usually cannot be resold afterwards. If you are not sure about the region, check final payout before trying to redeem it.
